A delicious and savory Garlic Mushroom Grilled Cheese sandwich made by sautéing garlic and mushrooms, then layering them with melted cheese between buttery toasted bread slices. Ready in just 20 minutes, this comforting and flavorful sandwich is perfect for a quick lunch or snack.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Mushroom Garlic Sauté
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Sandwich
- 4 slices bread
- 4 slices cheese (such as cheddar or Swiss)
- Additional butter, for grilling
Instructions
- Sauté Garlic: In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute, until fragrant, to release its aroma and flavor.
- Cook Mushrooms: Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet and cook until they become tender and golden brown, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Once done, remove from heat and set aside.
- Prepare Bread: Heat a separate skillet or griddle over medium heat. Spread a thin layer of butter on one side of each bread slice to ensure a golden crispy texture when grilled.
- Assemble Sandwiches: Place two slices of bread buttered side down on the skillet. Top each with a slice of cheese, then evenly distribute the cooked mushrooms on top of the cheese slices.
- Top and Grill: Place the remaining bread slices on top of the mushrooms, buttered side up, forming sandwiches.
- Cook Until Golden: Grill the sandwiches for 2-3 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted fully, pressing lightly if needed.
- Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them cool for a minute before slicing and serving, allowing the cheese to set slightly.
Notes
- You can use any cheese of your choice such as cheddar, Swiss, or mozzarella.
- For extra flavor, add fresh herbs like thyme or parsley to the mushroom mixture.
- If you prefer, use a non-dairy butter and vegan cheese to make this recipe vegan.
- Be careful not to burn the garlic while sautéing as it can become bitter.
- Serve with a side salad or tomato soup for a complete meal.
