Description

Crispy Hungarian Potato Cheese Sticks are a delightful snack featuring mashed potatoes combined with cheese and spices, shaped into sticks, coated in breadcrumbs, and fried until golden and crispy. Perfect as an appetizer or comfort food, these savory sticks bring a taste of Hungarian-inspired flavors with a satisfying crunch.

Ingredients

Scale

Potato Mixture

  • 2 cups potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese (or a mix of cheeses)
  • 1 egg yolk
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika (Hungarian sweet paprika preferred)
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)

Coating and Frying

  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • Oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Boil Potatoes: Boil potatoes in salted water for 10–12 minutes until tender. Drain thoroughly and mash with butter until smooth and creamy.
  2. Mix Ingredients: In the mashed potatoes, stir in shredded cheese, egg yolk, salt, black pepper, and paprika until the cheese fully melts and is incorporated into the mixture.
  3. Form Sticks: Allow the potato mixture to cool slightly, then fold in the all-purpose flour. Roll the mixture into stick shapes about 3 inches long, lightly dusting your hands with flour to prevent sticking.
  4. Coat Sticks: Dip each stick into the beaten egg to coat fully, then roll in breadcrumbs to cover every surface thoroughly for a crispy crust.
  5. Fry the Sticks: Heat oil in a skillet to 350°F (175°C). Fry the sticks in batches for 2–3 minutes, turning as needed, until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  6. Serve: Enjoy the crispy potato cheese sticks hot, optionally accompanied by sour cream or a tangy dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Use Hungarian sweet paprika for an authentic flavor, but regular paprika can be a substitute.
  • Ensure potatoes are well drained to avoid soggy mixture.
  • Maintain oil temperature at 350°F to ensure crispiness without absorbing too much oil.
  • Cheese can be varied with a mix of favorites like mozzarella or gouda for different flavor profiles.
  • Serve immediately for best texture and taste.
