Description

A hearty and flavorful vegan black bean burger made with wholesome ingredients like black beans, oats, and spices – perfect for grilling or pan-frying and served on a bun with your favorite toppings.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cans (15 oz each) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed + 2.5 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce or tamari
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
  • Olive oil for cooking

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine flaxseed and water. Let sit for 5 minutes to form a flax egg.
  2. In a large bowl, mash black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth with some chunks for texture.
  3. Add oats, red onion, garlic, olive oil, spices, soy sauce, and flax egg. Mix until well combined.
  4. Stir in chopped cilantro if using. Let mixture sit for 10–15 minutes to firm up.
  5. Form into 4–6 patties, depending on desired size.
  6. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a little olive oil. Cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned and heated through.
  7. Serve on buns with lettuce, tomato, avocado, and your favorite condiments.

Notes

  • Patties can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
  • For a gluten-free version, use certified gluten-free oats and tamari instead of soy sauce.
  • Grill carefully on a greased grill or use a grill pan to prevent sticking.
