Description

A savory twist on the classic patty melt, featuring juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, melted cheese, and a tangy secret sauce all grilled between slices of buttery rye bread.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp sweet pickle relish
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and cook the onions until caramelized, about 15 minutes. Set aside.
  2. In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, relish, and garlic powder to create the secret sauce. Set aside.
  3. Form ground beef into 4 thin patties slightly larger than the bread slices. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Cook patties in a skillet over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  5. Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. On the unbuttered side, spread secret sauce.
  6. Layer one slice of cheddar, a beef patty, caramelized onions, one slice of Swiss, and top with another bread slice, sauce side in.
  7. Grill each sandwich in a skillet over medium heat until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  8. Slice and serve hot.

Notes

  • Use a cast iron skillet for the best grilled crust on the bread.
  • You can substitute cheese types based on preference.
  • For extra crunch, add a layer of pickles inside the sandwich.
