Description

A fragrant and flavorful side dish, turmeric rice is infused with earthy turmeric and aromatic spices, making it a vibrant addition to any meal.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 2 cups water or vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 bay leaf (optional)
  • Fresh chopped cilantro for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain well.
  2. In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil or butter over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add minced garlic and sauté for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Stir in turmeric, cumin, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 minute to toast the spices.
  5. Add the rinsed rice and stir to coat the grains with the spices and oil.
  6. Pour in the water or vegetable broth and add the bay leaf if using. Bring to a boil.
  7. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-18 minutes, or until the rice is tender and liquid is absorbed.
  8. Remove from heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork.
  9. Garnish with fresh chopped cilantro if desired, and serve warm.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, use vegetable broth instead of water.
  • Add peas or chopped carrots for more texture and nutrition.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
