- 1 cup basmati rice
- 2 cups water or vegetable broth
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 bay leaf (optional)
- Fresh chopped cilantro for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain well.
- In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil or butter over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add minced garlic and sauté for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Stir in turmeric, cumin, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 minute to toast the spices.
- Add the rinsed rice and stir to coat the grains with the spices and oil.
- Pour in the water or vegetable broth and add the bay leaf if using. Bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-18 minutes, or until the rice is tender and liquid is absorbed.
- Remove from heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork.
- Garnish with fresh chopped cilantro if desired, and serve warm.
Notes
- For extra flavor, use vegetable broth instead of water.
- Add peas or chopped carrots for more texture and nutrition.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
