Description

A quick and delicious Toasted Italian Sandwich featuring layers of savory salami, pepperoni, ham, and melted cheese, complemented with fresh veggies and a tangy Italian dressing, all toasted to perfection for a warm, crispy finish.

Ingredients

Scale

Sandwich

  • 1 large Italian sub roll or ciabatta bread
  • 4 slices salami
  • 4 slices pepperoni
  • 4 slices ham or capicola
  • 4 slices provolone or mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 4 slices tomato
  • 2 tbsp red onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp banana peppers (optional)

Dressing and Spread

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tbsp mayonnaise or Dijon mustard (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven. Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) to get it ready for toasting the sandwich evenly and melting the cheese.
  2. Prepare the bread. Slice the Italian sub roll or ciabatta bread horizontally to create a top and bottom half for layering your ingredients.
  3. Layer the meats and cheese. On the bottom half, arrange the salami, pepperoni, ham or capicola, and provolone or mozzarella cheese slices to build the sandwich’s savory base.
  4. Add fresh vegetables. Top the meats and cheese with shredded lettuce, tomato slices, thinly sliced red onion, and banana peppers if using, adding crunch and flavor.
  5. Drizzle dressing and season. Pour olive oil and red wine vinegar over the veggies, then sprinkle with Italian seasoning to infuse the sandwich with classic Mediterranean flavors.
  6. Optional spread. Spread mayonnaise or Dijon mustard on the top half of the bread for added creaminess and a slight tang.
  7. Assemble and wrap. Place the top half of the bread onto the layered bottom half, then wrap the entire sandwich tightly in aluminum foil to prepare for toasting.
  8. Toast the sandwich. Place the wrapped sandwich in the preheated oven and bake for 5-7 minutes until the bread is crispy on the outside and the cheese inside has fully melted.
  9. Serve warm. Carefully remove the sandwich from the oven, unwrap the foil, slice, and enjoy your warm, toasted Italian sandwich.

Notes

  • You can substitute the meats with your preferred deli options.
  • For a vegetarian option, omit the meats and add grilled vegetables.
  • Banana peppers add a nice tangy spice but can be omitted if you prefer a milder flavor.
  • Wrapping in foil ensures even heating and prevents the bread from becoming too hard.
  • To speed up preparation, you can prepare the sandwich and wrap it ahead of time and toast right before serving.
