Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Produce
- 1 lb breakfast sausage (mild or spicy)
- 1 small onion, diced
Dairy and Soup
- 1 (10.5 oz) can cream of mushroom soup
- ½ cup milk
- 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese (divided)
Frozen
- 1 (32 oz) bag frozen tater tots
Spices and Garnish
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- Chopped parsley or green onions for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) to get it ready for baking the casserole.
- Cook the sausage and onions: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage along with the diced onion until the sausage is fully browned and cooked through. Drain any excess grease to prevent the casserole from becoming greasy.
- Mix the filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked sausage and onions with the cream of mushroom soup, milk, 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese, garlic powder, and black pepper. Stir well until everything is thoroughly mixed.
- Assemble in baking dish: Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish, then spread the sausage mixture evenly across the bottom. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer on top of the mixture.
- Bake: Place the dish uncovered into the oven and bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the tater tots are crispy and golden brown.
- Add remaining cheese: Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese on top. Return to the oven for an additional 5 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Rest and garnish: Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes after baking. Garnish with chopped parsley or green onions if desired before serving.
Notes
- You can substitute cream of mushroom soup with cream of chicken or cheddar soup for a different flavor.
- Add chopped bell peppers or jalapeños to the sausage mixture for extra flavor and texture.
- Drain excess grease thoroughly after cooking sausage to keep casserole from being greasy.
- Use mild or spicy sausage depending on your heat preference.
