Description

This delicious Taco Pie combines seasoned ground beef, crunchy tortilla chips, and melted cheddar cheese layered in a flaky pie crust. Topped with fresh lettuce, diced tomatoes, and optional garnishes, it’s a hearty Mexican-inspired main course perfect for a family-friendly dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Meat Filling

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 (1-ounce) packet taco seasoning
  • 1/2 cup water

For the Pie

  • 1 (9-inch) refrigerated pie crust (or homemade)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup crushed tortilla chips

For Serving

  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1 medium tomato, diced
  • Sliced black olives, jalapeños, or green onions (optional toppings)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F to prepare for baking the pie.
  2. Cook Beef and Onion: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and finely chopped onion for 6 to 8 minutes until the beef is browned and the onion softens. Drain any excess fat to keep the dish from being greasy.
  3. Add Seasoning: Stir in the taco seasoning packet and 1/2 cup water into the cooked meat. Simmer the mixture for 2 to 3 minutes, allowing it to thicken and become flavorful.
  4. Prepare Pie Crust: Place the refrigerated or homemade 9-inch pie crust into a pie plate. Press gently along the bottom and sides to fit the crust properly.
  5. Layer Ingredients: Spread the crushed tortilla chips evenly over the bottom of the pie crust. Then add the seasoned taco meat mixture, spreading it evenly over the chips. Next, evenly spread the sour cream over the meat, and sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top.
  6. Bake Pie: Bake the assembled pie in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese has melted and is bubbly.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Allow the pie to cool slightly before topping it with shredded lettuce, diced tomato, and optional toppings such as sliced black olives, jalapeños, or green onions. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, substitute ground turkey or plant-based meat for the ground beef.
  • Add refried beans or corn to the meat mixture for extra flavor and texture.
  • This dish is a great way to use up leftover taco night ingredients.
