Description

These Smoked Gouda Fritters are crispy, cheesy bites perfect for appetizers or party snacks. Paired with a tangy balsamic honey mustard dipping sauce, they combine smoky, sweet, and savory flavors for a delicious treat that’s quick to prepare and irresistible to eat.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Fritters:

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded smoked Gouda cheese
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons chopped chives or green onions
  • Vegetable oil for frying

For the Balsamic Honey Mustard Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise (optional, for creamier texture)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, garlic powder, and black pepper. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs with the milk. Combine the wet ingredients into the dry and stir gently until just combined. Fold in the shredded smoked Gouda cheese and chopped chives or green onions.
  2. Heat the oil: Pour about 2 inches of vegetable oil into a deep skillet or pot and heat to 350°F (175°C). It’s important the oil is hot enough to ensure a crispy exterior and proper cooking inside the fritters.
  3. Fry the fritters: Carefully drop heaping tablespoons of the batter into the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry each fritter for approximately 2 to 3 minutes per side until they turn golden brown and crisp. Remove them using a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  4. Make the dipping sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together Dijon mustard, honey, balsamic vinegar, and mayonnaise (if using) until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to your taste preferences.
  5. Serve: Serve the smoked Gouda fritters warm alongside the balsamic honey mustard dipping sauce for dipping. Enjoy them immediately for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • These fritters are best enjoyed hot and crispy straight from the fryer.
  • If making ahead, reheat them in the oven at 375°F (190°C) for 5 to 7 minutes to restore crispness.
  • For a flavor twist, smoked cheddar or Gruyère cheese can be substituted for smoked Gouda.
  • Be careful not to overcrowd the frying pan to maintain oil temperature and ensure even cooking.
