Ingredients
Scale
Beef Mixture
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 3 cloves garlic, freshly minced
- 1 tablespoon ginger, freshly minced
- 1/4 cup green onions, chopped
- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste
Rice
- 2 cups cooked rice (white or jasmine rice recommended)
Optional Toppings
- Sesame seeds
- Sliced cucumbers
- Kimchi
- Pickled vegetables
- Steamed broccoli
- Sliced bell peppers
- Fried egg
Instructions
- Cook the rice: Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch. Combine it with 2 cups of water in a pot. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 15 minutes until all the water is absorbed. Remove from heat and let the rice sit covered for an additional 5 minutes before fluffing it with a fork.
- Brown the beef: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and use a spatula to break it up as it cooks. Continue cooking and stirring until the beef is browned and no longer pink, approximately 5 to 7 minutes.
- Flavor the beef: Drain any excess fat from the skillet if needed. Add the freshly minced garlic and ginger to the beef and cook for 1 to 2 minutes until fragrant, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
- Add seasonings: Stir in the soy sauce, sesame oil, and chopped green onions. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to your liking. Let it simmer together for a couple of minutes so the flavors meld.
- Assemble the bowl: Spoon a generous helping of the cooked rice into the bottom of each bowl, forming a soft bed to hold the beef mixture.
- Top with beef and vegetables: Heap the seasoned ground beef over the rice. Surround or top with optional vegetables such as steamed broccoli or sliced bell peppers for extra flavor and nutrition.
- Garnish and serve: Finish each bowl by sprinkling sesame seeds and extra chopped green onions over the top. Add any other favorite toppings like kimchi, sliced cucumbers, pickled vegetables, or a fried egg to enhance the dish.
Notes
- Use lean ground beef for a healthier dish or substitute with ground turkey for a lighter option.
- Rinsing rice removes excess starch and helps achieve fluffy, non-sticky rice.
- Adjust soy sauce and salt levels depending on your sodium preference as soy sauce is naturally salty.
- For a spicier kick, consider adding a dash of gochujang (Korean chili paste) when cooking the beef.
- This recipe can be easily doubled to serve more people or for meal prep.
- Leftover beef and rice can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 1 month.
