Description

A delicious twist on a classic snack, these Savory French Onion Sausage Rolls feature caramelized onions and seasoned sausage wrapped in flaky puff pastry – perfect for parties or a cozy appetizer.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp balsamic vinegar
  • 500g sausage meat
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onions and cook until soft and golden, about 15 minutes.
  2. Stir in brown sugar and balsamic vinegar. Cook for another 5 minutes until caramelized. Let cool.
  3. Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  4. In a bowl, mix sausage meat, thyme, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Add the cooled onions and mix well.
  5. Lay out the puff pastry sheet and cut in half lengthwise.
  6. Divide the sausage mixture between the two strips, forming a log down the center of each.
  7. Brush the edges with egg wash and roll the pastry over the filling to seal. Place seam-side down on the tray.
  8. Cut into smaller rolls, brush the tops with more egg wash, and sprinkle with sesame seeds if using.
  9. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and cooked through.
  10. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • You can prepare the rolls ahead and freeze them before baking.
  • Use store-bought caramelized onion chutney to save time.
  • Great served with mustard or a dipping sauce.
