- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp balsamic vinegar
- 500g sausage meat
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds (optional)
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onions and cook until soft and golden, about 15 minutes.
- Stir in brown sugar and balsamic vinegar. Cook for another 5 minutes until caramelized. Let cool.
- Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, mix sausage meat, thyme, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Add the cooled onions and mix well.
- Lay out the puff pastry sheet and cut in half lengthwise.
- Divide the sausage mixture between the two strips, forming a log down the center of each.
- Brush the edges with egg wash and roll the pastry over the filling to seal. Place seam-side down on the tray.
- Cut into smaller rolls, brush the tops with more egg wash, and sprinkle with sesame seeds if using.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and cooked through.
- Serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- You can prepare the rolls ahead and freeze them before baking.
- Use store-bought caramelized onion chutney to save time.
- Great served with mustard or a dipping sauce.
