Description

These classic Sausage Rolls are a savory British-inspired appetizer featuring seasoned ground pork encased in flaky puff pastry. Easy to prepare and perfect for parties or snacks, they’re golden baked to crispy perfection with aromatic herbs and spices.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground pork sausage (or use beef, turkey, or a mix)
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg, beaten (for sealing and brushing)
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 tablespoon flour (for dusting)
  • Optional: ½ teaspoon mustard or Worcestershire sauce for added flavor

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Lightly dust your work surface with flour to prevent sticking.
  2. Roll the Puff Pastry: Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet into a roughly 10×12 inch rectangle for easier assembly.
  3. Prepare the Sausage Mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground sausage with dried sage, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, and optional mustard or Worcestershire sauce. Mix thoroughly until all seasoning is evenly incorporated.
  4. Assemble the Rolls: Cut the pastry sheet lengthwise into two equal strips. Divide the sausage mixture into two portions and shape each into a long log along the center of each pastry strip. Brush the edges of the pastry with the beaten egg.
  5. Seal and Cut: Fold the pastry over the sausage logs, pressing the edges firmly to seal. Place them seam-side down on the floured surface and cut each log into 4 to 6 pieces, depending on desired size.
  6. Prepare for Baking: Transfer the sausage rolls onto the prepared baking sheet with the seam-side down. Brush the tops generously with the remaining beaten egg to ensure a golden finish.
  7. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the sausage is fully cooked through.
  8. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and allow the sausage rolls to cool slightly before serving warm.

Notes

  • Serve with ketchup, mustard, or a spicy dipping sauce for extra flavor.
  • You can freeze unbaked sausage rolls and bake them straight from frozen; simply add 5 to 7 minutes to the cooking time.
