  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1 (3 oz) package strawberry or cherry flavored gelatin
  • 1 (3 oz) package berry blue flavored gelatin
  • 1 (8 oz) container whipped topping (like Cool Whip), thawed
  • Red, white, and blue sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven according to the cake mix instructions and prepare a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Prepare the white cake mix as directed on the box and bake in the prepared pan. Allow to cool for 15–20 minutes.
  3. Using a fork or the handle of a wooden spoon, poke holes all over the cooled cake.
  4. Dissolve the strawberry gelatin in 1/2 cup boiling water, then add 1/4 cup cold water. Stir until dissolved.
  5. Carefully pour the red gelatin over one half of the cake, letting it seep into the holes.
  6. Repeat with the berry blue gelatin on the other half of the cake.
  7. Refrigerate the cake for at least 2 hours to set the gelatin.
  8. Spread the whipped topping evenly over the chilled cake.
  9. Decorate with red, white, and blue sprinkles, if desired.
  10. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve.
