Description

A festive and colorful Red, White, and Blue Fourth of July Cake that’s perfect for patriotic celebrations, featuring layers of vibrant vanilla cake and rich buttercream frosting.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Red food coloring
  • Blue food coloring
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Red, white, and blue sprinkles (optional for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla extract.
  4. Alternate adding the flour mixture and milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with flour.
  5. Divide the batter evenly into three bowls. Color one bowl red, one blue, and leave one white.
  6. Pour each colored batter into a separate prepared pan. Smooth the tops.
  7. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cakes cool completely.
  8. For the frosting, beat the butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla, and heavy cream. Beat until fluffy.
  9. Level the cake layers if needed. Stack the blue layer on the bottom, spread a layer of frosting, add the white layer, more frosting, then the red layer.
  10. Frost the top and sides of the cake with remaining frosting. Decorate with sprinkles if desired.

Notes

  • You can use gel food coloring for more vibrant hues.
  • Cakes can be baked ahead and frozen for up to a week.
  • Let the cake sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before serving if refrigerated.
