Ingredients
Scale
Pastry
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (for dusting)
Cheese and Seasoning
- 1 cup shredded sharp white cheddar cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Egg Wash
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
- Roll Out Puff Pastry: Lightly flour a clean surface and roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet into a 10×12-inch rectangle to create an even base for toppings.
- Apply Egg Wash: Brush the entire surface of the pastry with the beaten egg, which will help the cheese and pepper stick and give the straws a glossy finish.
- Add Cheese and Pepper: Evenly sprinkle the shredded sharp white cheddar cheese over the pastry, followed by the freshly ground black pepper for seasoning.
- Seal Toppings and Fold: Gently press the cheese and pepper into the pastry using your hands or a rolling pin. Then fold the pastry in half lengthwise and roll lightly to seal the layers together.
- Cut and Twist Strips: Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to slice the folded pastry into 1/2-inch wide strips. Twist each strip several times to create the characteristic spiral shape and place them spaced about 1 inch apart on the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush with More Egg Wash: Brush the tops of the twisted strips with additional egg wash to enhance browning and glossiness during baking.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12–15 minutes, or until the cheese straws are golden brown and puffed up, signaling they are perfectly cooked.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and allow the cheese straws to cool slightly before serving to enjoy their full flavor and crisp texture.
Notes
- For an extra burst of flavor, add a pinch of garlic powder or sprinkle some Parmesan cheese over the puff pastry before folding.
- These cheese straws are best enjoyed fresh from the oven but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
- To reheat, place the stored straws in a low oven until warmed and crisp again.
