- 2 bagels, halved
- 1 tablespoon butter (plus more for grilling)
- 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 1 small pear, thinly sliced
- 1 small apple, thinly sliced
- 4 slices sharp white cheddar cheese (or 1 cup shredded)
- 1 tablespoon honey or fig jam (optional)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, add butter and olive oil. Once hot, add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15–20 minutes until deeply caramelized. Season with a pinch of salt and let cool slightly.
- Assemble the Sandwich: Butter the cut sides of each bagel half. On the bottom half of each bagel, layer cheddar cheese, a few slices of pear and apple, caramelized onions, and a drizzle of honey or fig jam if using. Top with another layer of cheese, then close with the top bagel half.
- Grill the Sandwich: Heat a skillet or pan over medium-low heat. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and press gently with a spatula or pan lid. Cook for 3–4 minutes per side, flipping carefully, until the bagel is golden and the cheese is melted.
- Serve: Let rest for 1 minute before slicing and serving warm.
