Description

Ingredients

  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (about 4 medium potatoes)
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
  3. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly to form a roux.
  4. Gradually whisk in milk, ensuring there are no lumps.
  5. Cook until the sauce thickens, then season with salt, pepper, and onion powder if using.
  6. In a greased 2-quart baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes.
  7. Pour half of the sauce over the potatoes. If using cheese, sprinkle some over the layer.
  8. Repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce (and cheese if using).
  9. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  10. Remove foil and bake an additional 30-35 minutes, until potatoes are tender and top is golden.
  11. Let rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add minced garlic to the sauce.
  • Use a mandoline slicer for even potato slices.
  • Add cooked ham or bacon for a heartier dish.
