Description

Mexican Picadillo is a traditional ground beef dish simmered with tomatoes, potatoes, and spices, perfect for tacos, rice, or as a standalone meal.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 large tomato, chopped
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas
  • 1/2 cup diced carrots
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onion and garlic; sauté until translucent.
  2. Add ground beef and cook until browned. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Stir in diced potatoes, chopped tomato, tomato sauce, and beef broth.
  4. Season with cumin, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  5. Cover and simmer on low heat for 15-20 minutes until potatoes are tender.
  6. Add peas and carrots; continue cooking for another 5-7 minutes until vegetables are soft.
  7. Adjust seasoning if needed and serve hot.

Notes

  • Serve with rice or warm tortillas.
  • You can add raisins or olives for a sweet-savory twist.
  • Ground turkey can be used as a lighter alternative.
