Ingredients
Scale
Crust
- 1 cup graham cracker crumbs
- 3 tablespoons melted butter
- 2 tablespoons sugar
Key Lime Filling
- 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
- 1/2 cup key lime juice (fresh or bottled)
- 1 tablespoon lime zest
Whipped Cream
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Garnish
- Fresh lime slices and zest for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Crust Mixture: In a medium bowl, combine graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and sugar. Mix until the texture resembles wet sand. Set aside.
- Make the Key Lime Filling: In another bowl, whisk together sweetened condensed milk, key lime juice, and lime zest until smooth. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 10 minutes.
- Whip the Cream: In a separate chilled bowl, beat heavy whipping cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
- Combine Filling and Cream: Gently fold half of the whipped cream into the key lime mixture until combined to create a light and creamy filling.
- Assemble the Trifle: Start layering the dessert in clear glasses or a large trifle dish by spooning a layer of graham cracker mixture first.
- Add Lime Filling: Next, add a layer of the key lime cream mixture over the graham cracker crumbs.
- Top with Whipped Cream: Add a dollop of the remaining whipped cream on top of the lime layer.
- Repeat Layers: Continue layering graham cracker crumbs, key lime filling, and whipped cream until the container is full, finishing with whipped cream and a sprinkle of graham cracker crumbs on top.
- Garnish: Decorate with fresh lime zest or lime slices if desired for a fresh look.
- Chill: Refrigerate the assembled trifle for at least 1 hour before serving to allow flavors to meld and the dessert to set properly.
Notes
- Use fresh key lime juice for the best tart flavor, but bottled juice works in a pinch.
- Make sure the bowl and beaters are chilled before whipping cream to help achieve soft peaks.
- Prepare the trifle at least 1 hour ahead to allow flavors to develop and the layers to meld.
- Graham cracker crumbs can be substituted with digestive biscuits if unavailable.
- For a less sweet version, reduce the sugar in the crust or the powdered sugar in the whipped cream slightly.
