Description

This homemade apple pie filling is rich, spiced, and perfect for pies, crisps, or as a topping. It’s made with fresh apples, sugar, and warm spices, offering the perfect balance of sweetness and tartness.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 6 cups peeled and sliced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples evenly.
  2. In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine water, sugars, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and lemon juice. Stir until smooth.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly, until it thickens (about 2 minutes).
  4. Add the sliced apples and reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 10–15 minutes, or until apples are just tender.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  6. Let the filling cool before using or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for balanced flavor.
  • The filling thickens more as it cools.
  • Can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days or frozen for 3 months.
