Description

Sloppy Joes are a classic American comfort food, featuring seasoned ground beef in a tangy, sweet sauce, served on toasted buns. This homemade version is quick and easy to make, perfect for a weeknight dinner the whole family will love.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Ground Beef Mixture:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Sauce:

  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)

To Serve:

  • 4 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Cook Ground Beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess grease.
  2. Add Vegetables: Add the onion, green pepper, and garlic, and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until softened.
  3. Make Sauce: Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and smoked paprika if using. Simmer for 10 to 15 minutes until thick.
  4. Assemble: Toast the hamburger buns, spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom halves, top with the other halves, and serve warm.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey or plant-based meat for a lighter or vegetarian version.
  • For a spicier kick, add hot sauce or red pepper flakes.
  • Leftovers keep well and are great for meal prep.
