Description

A spicy and pungent homemade Chinese hot mustard perfect as a dipping sauce for egg rolls, dumplings, and other Asian appetizers.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1/4 cup dry mustard powder
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon rice vinegar (optional, for mildness)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vegetable oil (optional, for smooth texture)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the dry mustard powder and cold water.
  2. Mix thoroughly until a smooth paste forms.
  3. Let the mixture sit uncovered at room temperature for 10–15 minutes to develop its heat and flavor.
  4. Optional: Stir in salt, rice vinegar, and vegetable oil for enhanced flavor and texture.
  5. Use immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Notes

  • The mustard becomes less spicy over time, so it’s best consumed fresh.
  • Use cold water to preserve the mustard’s heat during mixing.
  • Adjust the consistency with a few extra drops of water if needed.
