Dip Ingredients
- 1 (10 oz) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
- 1 packet vegetable soup mix (Lipton or Knorr)
- 1 cup sour cream (light version optional)
- 1 cup mayonnaise (light version optional)
- ½ cup chopped onion (or substitute with chopped celery)
- 1 (8 oz) can water chestnuts, drained and chopped
Bread Bowl
- 1 loaf unsliced bread (firm, rectangular loaf ideal for coffin shape)
Dippers
- Blue corn tortilla chips
- Pretzels
- Crackers
- Bread cubes (from hollowed bread)
Decoration
- Mini skeleton for decoration (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dip: In a large bowl, combine the thawed and thoroughly drained spinach with the vegetable soup mix packet, sour cream, mayonnaise, chopped onion (or celery), and chopped water chestnuts. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated. Cover and refrigerate the mixture for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld and deepen.
- Make the Bread Coffin: Take the unsliced rectangular loaf of bread and carefully hollow out the bottom, cutting about 2 inches deep while leaving a ¾ inch border intact around the edges. Save the scooped-out bread to use later as dippers. Next, hollow out the inside of the bread “lid” (the top part) to a depth of around ½ to ¾ inch. Optionally, you can attach a breadstick to the front of the coffin using toothpicks to create a decorative casket handle.
- Assemble the Dip: Spoon the chilled spinach dip into the hollowed-out bread coffin, filling it completely to ensure an attractive presentation. If desired, place a mini skeleton decoration inside or beside the dip for a Halloween touch.
- Serve: Arrange the coffin bread bowl on a large serving platter and surround it with your choice of dippers — blue corn tortilla chips, pretzels, crackers, and the reserved bread cubes. This arrangement creates a fun, shareable appetizer perfect for Halloween festivities.
Notes
- Make sure to squeeze out as much water as possible from the thawed spinach to prevent a watery dip.
- You can substitute chopped celery for onion if you prefer a milder flavor or need a less pungent option.
- Using light sour cream and mayonnaise lowers the fat content without sacrificing creaminess.
- Prepare the dip in advance and refrigerate overnight for even better flavor development.
- The bread can be shaped or decorated additional ways to enhance the Halloween theme.
