Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Vegetables
- 12 ounces Italian sausage (mild or spicy, casings removed)
- 1 small onion (finely diced)
- 3 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 cup frozen peas
Main Ingredients
- 16 ounces potato gnocchi
Seasonings and Others
- ¼ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- ¼ cup chicken broth or heavy cream (for a saucier dish)
- Red pepper flakes (to taste)
- Fresh parsley or basil (for garnish)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)
Instructions
- Heat the Skillet: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil to warm.
- Cook the Sausage: Add the Italian sausage to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned and fully cooked through. Drain excess grease if necessary to avoid a greasy dish.
- Sauté Onion: Add the finely diced onion to the skillet with the sausage. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the onion softens and becomes translucent, enhancing the flavor.
- Add Garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, just until fragrant but not burned, to infuse the dish with aroma.
- Cook the Gnocchi: Add the potato gnocchi directly to the skillet. Spread them out in an even layer and let cook undisturbed for 2 to 3 minutes to allow golden, crispy edges to form.
- Continue Cooking Gnocchi: Stir the gnocchi and cook for an additional 3 to 4 minutes until they are lightly crisped all around, enhancing the texture.
- Add Peas and Liquid: Stir in the frozen peas to combine. If the mixture seems dry, add chicken broth or heavy cream to create a saucier consistency and keep the dish moist.
- Season: Season the entire mixture with salt and black pepper to taste. Add red pepper flakes if you prefer a bit of heat.
- Finish and Garnish: Remove the skillet from heat. Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese over the top and garnish with fresh parsley or basil for a fresh herbal note. Serve warm immediately for best flavor and texture.
Notes
- Use either mild or spicy Italian sausage based on your heat preference.
- For a creamier dish, opt for heavy cream instead of chicken broth.
- To make this dish vegetarian, substitute sausage with plant-based sausage or mushrooms.
- Be careful not to burn the garlic; it cooks quickly and adds essential aroma.
- Gnocchi can be store-bought or homemade, but cooking times may vary slightly.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and gently reheated in a skillet with a splash of broth or cream to prevent drying out.
