Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 4 slices Gruyère or Swiss cheese
- 4 hamburger buns
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- Optional: mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, or other condiments
Instructions
- Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions, sugar, and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are deeply caramelized, about 25-30 minutes.
- While onions cook, preheat grill or skillet over medium-high heat.
- In a bowl, mix ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Form into 4 equal patties.
- Grill or cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side, or until desired doneness.
- Top each burger with a slice of cheese during the last minute of cooking and cover to melt.
- Toast hamburger buns if desired.
- Assemble the burgers by placing a patty on each bun bottom, topping with caramelized onions and condiments of choice, then the top bun.
Notes
- Gruyère cheese gives an authentic French onion flavor, but Swiss or provolone can be substituted.
- Caramelizing onions slowly is key—don’t rush the process.
- Use brioche buns for added richness.
