Description

Juicy beef burgers topped with caramelized onions and melted cheese, inspired by the classic flavors of French onion soup.


Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 4 slices Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Optional: mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, or other condiments

Instructions

  1. Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions, sugar, and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are deeply caramelized, about 25-30 minutes.
  2. While onions cook, preheat grill or skillet over medium-high heat.
  3. In a bowl, mix ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Form into 4 equal patties.
  4. Grill or cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side, or until desired doneness.
  5. Top each burger with a slice of cheese during the last minute of cooking and cover to melt.
  6. Toast hamburger buns if desired.
  7. Assemble the burgers by placing a patty on each bun bottom, topping with caramelized onions and condiments of choice, then the top bun.

Notes

  • Gruyère cheese gives an authentic French onion flavor, but Swiss or provolone can be substituted.
  • Caramelizing onions slowly is key—don’t rush the process.
  • Use brioche buns for added richness.
