Description

These Fluffy and Soft Dinner Rolls are the perfect homemade bread option to complement any meal. Made with simple ingredients like all-purpose flour, yeast, milk, and butter, these rolls are delightfully light, tender, and buttery. They feature a soft crumb and a golden crust, achieved through a double rise and a quick bake in the oven. Ideal for family dinners, holiday feasts, or any occasion that calls for warm, fresh bread.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for kneading)
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F or 43°C)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Finishing

  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let the mixture sit for 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Mix Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Add the foamy yeast mixture, egg, and melted butter. Stir until a shaggy dough forms that begins to come together.
  3. Knead: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead by hand for 8–10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook to knead the dough for 5–6 minutes.
  4. First Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl. Cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Shape Rolls: Gently punch down the risen dough to release air. Divide the dough evenly into 12 to 15 pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth round ball and arrange them in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, leaving a little space between rolls.
  6. Second Rise: Cover the shaped rolls again and allow them to rise for 30 to 45 minutes until they become puffy and nearly double in size.
  7. Bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 18 to 22 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the rolls sound hollow when tapped.
  8. Brush with Butter: Remove the rolls from the oven and immediately brush the tops with the melted butter to add shine and extra softness. Serve the rolls warm for the best taste and texture.

Notes

  • Use warm milk around 110°F (43°C) to properly activate the yeast without killing it.
  • If you don’t have unsalted butter, use salted butter and reduce the added salt slightly.
  • Ensure the dough is kneaded well to develop gluten for a soft and fluffy texture.
  • You can store leftover rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze them for longer storage.
  • Reheat rolls in a warm oven or microwave before serving to restore softness.
