Description

A comforting and hearty Serbian moussaka made with layers of potatoes and ground meat, baked in a creamy egg mixture. This easy-to-follow recipe is perfect for a wholesome family dinner.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef or pork
  • 6 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups (350ml) milk
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (optional, for thicker consistency)
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet, heat the vegetable oil and sauté the chopped onion until translucent. Add the garlic and cook for another minute.
  3. Add the ground meat, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes. Lightly season them with salt and pepper.
  5. Grease a baking dish. Layer half of the potatoes on the bottom, then spread the meat mixture evenly, and top with the remaining potatoes.
  6. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, and flour (if using). Pour the mixture over the layered potatoes and meat.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and potatoes are cooked through.
  8. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can use a mix of ground beef and pork.
  • Use a mandoline slicer for even potato slices.
  • You can add a bit of cheese on top for a twist.
