- 2 pounds russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup whole milk (more if needed)
- Salt to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Place the cubed potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add a pinch of salt.
- Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to a simmer. Cook until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes.
- Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
- Add butter and begin mashing the potatoes.
- Gradually add milk, mashing until smooth and creamy. Add more milk if a softer texture is desired.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm.
Notes
- Use warm milk to keep the potatoes hot and help them absorb the liquid better.
- For extra flavor, add garlic or cream cheese.
- Do not overmix to avoid gummy texture.
