Ingredients
Scale
Berry Filling
- 7 cups fresh or frozen mixed berries
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch
Crisp Topping
- 2/3 cup old-fashioned oats
- 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup salted butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Generously grease a 7×11-inch or 9×9-inch baking dish with butter to prevent sticking.
- Combine Berry Filling: In the prepared baking dish, place the mixed berries, granulated sugar, lemon juice, 1/4 cup flour, and cornstarch. Gently stir with a large spoon to coat the berries evenly without crushing them. Set this mixture aside.
- Prepare Crisp Topping: In a large mixing bowl, combine the oats, 2/3 cup flour, granulated sugar, light brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and salt. Stir to blend all dry ingredients well.
- Add Butter to Topping: Pour the melted salted butter into the dry ingredients and mix thoroughly until the mixture forms clumps and has a wet sand-like texture.
- Assemble and Bake: Evenly sprinkle the crisp topping over the berry mixture in the baking dish. Bake uncovered for 35 minutes or until the berries begin to bubble and the topping is golden brown. If the topping browns too quickly, tent a piece of foil over the dish during the last 10 minutes of baking.
- Rest and Serve: Remove from the oven and allow the crisp to rest for 8 minutes to thicken. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgent treat.
Notes
- You can use fresh or frozen berries; if frozen, no need to thaw before baking.
- For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with gluten-free flour blends.
- To reduce sugar, you can decrease the granulated sugar amount; however, it may affect the topping’s texture and sweetness.
- Storing leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days is recommended; reheat before serving.
- Adding chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts to the topping can add extra crunch and flavor.
