Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (optional, for thickening)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
  2. Form into meatballs, about 1 1/2 inches in diameter.
  3. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add butter, sliced onions, and mushrooms. Sauté until soft and golden.
  5. Sprinkle flour over the onions and mushrooms, stir and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  6. Gradually whisk in beef broth and ketchup, stirring constantly until the gravy thickens slightly.
  7. Return the meatballs to the skillet, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until fully cooked. Add cornstarch slurry if thicker gravy is desired.
  8. Serve hot with mashed potatoes or noodles.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef to reduce fat content.
  • For a gluten-free option, substitute breadcrumbs and flour with gluten-free versions.
  • These meatballs freeze well for meal prep.
