Description

Crispy Homemade Onion Rings are a delicious and crunchy snack or side dish made by dipping fresh yellow onion rings in seasoned batter and breadcrumbs, then deep frying until golden and crispy. Perfectly seasoned and served hot with your favorite dipping sauces, these onion rings make a classic American appetizer loved by all.

Ingredients

Scale

Onion Rings

  • 2 large yellow onions, sliced into ½-inch rings and separated

Batter and Coating

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk with 1 tablespoon vinegar)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup plain breadcrumbs or panko

For Frying

  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Soak the Onions: In a large bowl, soak the sliced onion rings in cold water for 10–15 minutes to reduce their sharpness and enhance crispiness when fried. Drain and pat dry thoroughly before proceeding.
  2. Prepare the Batter and Coatings: In one bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, and paprika. In a second bowl, whisk the buttermilk and egg together until combined. In a third bowl, spread the breadcrumbs.
  3. Coat the Onion Rings: Dredge each onion ring first in the flour mixture to create a dry base, then dip into the wet buttermilk-egg mixture, and finally coat evenly with breadcrumbs. Press gently to ensure the crumbs adhere well to the surface.
  4. Heat Oil and Fry: Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot or skillet to 350°F (175°C). Fry the coated onion rings carefully in batches to avoid overcrowding, cooking them for 2–3 minutes on each side or until they develop a golden brown and crispy exterior.
  5. Drain Excess Oil: Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried onion rings and place them on paper towels lined tray to absorb excess oil and keep them crispy.
  6. Serve: Serve the hot crispy onion rings immediately with ketchup, ranch dressing, or your preferred dipping sauce for a delightful snack or side dish.

Notes

  • Panko breadcrumbs provide an extra crispy coating compared to regular breadcrumbs.
  • For a lighter version, you can bake or air fry the coated onion rings by spraying them with oil and cooking at 400°F (200°C) for 12–15 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • Make sure to dry the onion rings well after soaking to avoid oil splattering during frying.
  • Keeping the oil temperature steady is important for even cooking and preventing greasy onion rings.
