Ingredients
Scale
Caramelized Onions
- 2 large yellow onions, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon vegan butter (or regular butter)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Dip Base
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (or dairy-free yogurt)
- 1/2 cup vegan or regular mayonnaise
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar
- 1 teaspoon coconut aminos or low-sodium soy sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Heat fats: Heat olive oil and vegan or regular butter in a large skillet over medium heat, preparing the pan for caramelizing the onions evenly.
- Caramelize onions: Add finely chopped onions and 1/2 teaspoon salt to the skillet. Cook, stirring frequently, for 30 to 40 minutes until the onions become golden brown and caramelized. Add a splash of water if the onions start to dry out, to prevent burning.
- Cool onions: Remove the skillet from heat and allow the caramelized onions to cool to room temperature, ensuring they won’t curdle the dairy in the dip mixture.
- Mix dip base: In a medium bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, mayonnaise, onion powder, garlic powder, white wine vinegar, coconut aminos (or soy sauce), and black pepper. Stir thoroughly to create a smooth, seasoned base.
- Combine onions and base: Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the seasoned yogurt and mayonnaise mixture until fully incorporated.
- Adjust seasoning: Taste the dip and modify the seasoning if necessary, adding more salt, pepper, or vinegar to suit your preference.
- Chill: Refrigerate the dip for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld and the dip to thicken slightly.
- Serve: Serve the chilled French onion dip with your choice of chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables for dipping.
Notes
- Using vegan butter and dairy-free yogurt makes this dip completely vegan-friendly.
- Slow caramelization of onions is key for developing the dip’s rich flavor; do not rush the cooking process.
- If you prefer a smoother dip, you can pulse the caramelized onions in a food processor before folding into the base.
- Store any leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Substitute coconut aminos with low-sodium soy sauce for a similar umami flavor.
