Description

These Cranberry Orange Cinnamon Rolls are a festive twist on the classic breakfast treat, filled with a tangy cranberry-orange filling and topped with luscious cream cheese frosting.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 2 tbsp orange zest
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 12 tbsp milk (as needed for frosting consistency)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add melted butter, egg, and salt. Mix well.
  3. Gradually add flour and mix until a dough forms. Knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Meanwhile, in a saucepan, combine cranberries, orange juice, and 1 tbsp orange zest. Cook over medium heat until cranberries burst and mixture thickens. Let cool.
  6. Roll out dough on a floured surface into a rectangle. Spread cranberry filling over the dough.
  7. Mix brown sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over the filling.
  8. Roll the dough tightly and cut into 12 rolls. Place in a greased baking dish.
  9. Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes.
  10. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake rolls for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  11. While rolls bake, make frosting by beating cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, remaining orange zest, and milk until smooth.
  12. Spread frosting over warm rolls before serving.

Notes

  • You can make the rolls ahead and refrigerate overnight before the second rise.
  • Fresh or frozen cranberries both work well in the filling.
  • Add chopped nuts for extra crunch.
