Description

Christmas Crack, also known as Cracker Toffee, is a delightful and addictive holiday treat featuring a crispy saltine cracker base topped with rich buttery toffee and melted chocolate, finished with festive sprinkles. It’s a quick and easy recipe that combines sweet, salty, and crunchy textures perfect for festive gatherings or gifting.

Ingredients

Scale

Base

  • 40-48 saltine crackers (about 1 1/2 sleeves)

Toffee

  • 1 cup butter (salted or unsalted, 2 sticks)
  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed, dark brown sugar)

Toppings

  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (or milk chocolate chips, or white chocolate, or combination)
  • ½ cup sprinkles (or M&M’s, crushed candy canes, or candies of choice)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350℉ to ready it for baking the toffee-topped crackers.
  2. Prepare Baking Tray: Line a rimmed sheet pan (15″×10″) with parchment paper or aluminum foil sprayed with cooking spray, or use a nonstick silicone baking mat for easy removal later.
  3. Arrange Crackers: Place the saltine crackers in a single layer across the bottom of the tray, breaking some crackers if necessary to fill any gaps for an even base layer.
  4. Make Toffee: In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat, melt the butter and stir in the brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil, stirring occasionally, and cook for 3 minutes until bubbly and amber colored. Remove from heat immediately.
  5. Pour Toffee Over Crackers: Carefully pour the hot toffee evenly over the saltine crackers. Quickly spread it out with a spatula to fully cover all crackers.
  6. Bake: Place the sheet pan in the preheated oven and bake for 3-5 minutes until the toffee mixture starts bubbling.
  7. Add Chocolate Chips: Remove from oven and immediately scatter chocolate chips over the hot toffee layer. Let sit 1-2 minutes to soften, then spread evenly using a spatula. If the chocolate isn’t melting easily, return to the oven for 1-2 minutes more before spreading.
  8. Add Sprinkles: Sprinkle your choice of sprinkles or candies over the melted chocolate before it sets.
  9. Cool and Set: Let the toffee cool completely at room temperature or refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour until chocolate and toffee harden.
  10. Break Into Pieces: Once hardened, invert the tray to remove the toffee and peel off the parchment or foil. Break or cut the toffee into pieces for serving.
  11. Serve and Store: Enjoy immediately or store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge to maintain freshness.

Notes

  • Use dark brown sugar for a richer toffee flavor.
  • Ensure to spread the toffee quickly before it hardens for even coverage.
  • For easy cleanup, line your pan well with foil or parchment.
  • You can customize toppings with crushed candy canes, M&M’s, or your favorite candies.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container to keep the toffee crisp.
