Description

This Caramelized Onion and Gruyère Tart combines the sweetness of slowly caramelized onions with the rich, nutty flavor of Gruyère cheese, baked into a flaky puff pastry base. Topped with fresh thyme and a golden egg wash, this savory tart is perfect as an appetizer, brunch dish, or light meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Puff Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed)

Caramelized Onions

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves

Topping

  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, grated
  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to prepare for baking the tart.
  2. Caramelize Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, warm the olive oil and butter. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized. Season with salt, pepper, and sprinkle fresh thyme leaves evenly.
  3. Prepare Puff Pastry: On a floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet to fit your tart pan. Transfer the pastry carefully to the pan and prick the bottom with a fork to prevent excessive puffing during baking.
  4. Assemble Tart: Spread the caramelized onions evenly over the puff pastry base. Then, sprinkle the grated Gruyère cheese uniformly on top of the onions.
  5. Apply Egg Wash: Brush the edges of the puff pastry with the beaten egg to help them turn golden and glossy when baked.
  6. Bake Tart: Place the tart in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbling.
  7. Cool and Serve: Remove the tart from the oven and allow it to cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • You can substitute Gruyère with other melty cheeses like Emmental or Comté if unavailable.
  • For an extra depth of flavor, add a splash of balsamic vinegar when caramelizing the onions.
  • Use fresh thyme for best aromatic results; dried thyme can be used but in smaller quantities.
  • Ensure the puff pastry is fully thawed before rolling to avoid cracking.
