Description

This Burger Bowls recipe offers a delicious low-carb alternative to traditional burgers by combining crispy seasoned potatoes, flavorful spiced ground beef, fresh shredded lettuce, cheese, and tangy pickle slices. Topped with a homemade burger sauce, these bowls are perfect for a quick and satisfying meal that’s both hearty and easy to assemble.

Ingredients

Scale

Spice Mix

  • 1 ½ teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano or mixed herbs
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Potatoes

  • 2-3 medium potatoes, washed and cut into chip-sized pieces
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for potatoes)
  • Half of the spice mix (reserved for potatoes)

Ground Beef

  • 500 grams lean beef mince/ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking beef)
  • Remaining half of the spice mix (reserved for beef)

Additional Ingredients

  • Lettuce, shredded
  • Cheese, dairy-free or regular as preferred
  • Pickle slices

Burger Sauce

  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon mustard (Dijon or yellow)
  • 1 teaspoon pickle juice (from the jar of pickles)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika

Instructions

  1. Prepare the spice mix: In a small bowl, combine smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano or mixed herbs, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly and set aside.
  2. Prep potatoes: Wash and cut the potatoes into chip-sized pieces. Pat them dry using paper towels to remove any excess moisture, which helps in achieving crispiness during cooking.
  3. Season and cook potatoes: Place the potato chips in a large mixing bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and half of the prepared spice mix, tossing thoroughly to coat all potato pieces evenly. Spread the potatoes out in a single layer on a baking tray. Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (390°F) for 30 to 40 minutes until golden and crispy, flipping halfway through. Alternatively, you can air fry the potatoes for about 20 minutes until crisp.
  4. Cook the beef: While the potatoes bake, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a frying pan over high heat. Add the ground beef, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Once the beef has browned, sprinkle in the remaining half of the spice mix. Continue cooking until the beef is well browned and any moisture has evaporated, ensuring the mince is flavorful and fully cooked.
  5. Make the burger sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickle juice, garlic powder, and smoked paprika. Stir well, taste, and adjust seasoning if necessary.
  6. Assemble the bowls: Divide the crispy cooked potatoes among serving bowls. Add shredded lettuce to fill the remaining space in each bowl. Top with the cooked ground beef, cheese (either sliced or shredded), and pickle slices. Drizzle the homemade burger sauce over everything and serve immediately for the best taste.

Notes

  • You can substitute the potatoes for sweet potatoes for a slightly different flavor and added nutrition.
  • For a dairy-free version, use plant-based cheese alternatives or omit the cheese entirely.
  • The burger sauce can be adjusted in sweetness or tanginess by varying the amount of ketchup and pickle juice.
  • If air frying the potatoes, shake the basket halfway through cooking to ensure even crispiness.
  • Leftover cooked beef and potatoes can be stored separately in the fridge for up to 2 days.
